Floriculture Green Labels

In floriculture, Green Labels are a third-party certification system that sets the standards for the way in which flowers and ornamental plants are produced and the sustainable farming methods flower growers must follow in order to be deemed socially and environmentally responsible. Green label certification ensures that farmers can have a fair trade recognition label printed on the flower boxes, as well as on each flower bunch wrapper and bouquet sleeves. Becoming a green certified farm leads to better prices, economic development in cooperatives, and better health care, schools, and infrastructure for the farm workers.

Green Label Eco Flowers

Eco flowers are produced by flower growers that follow sustainable agricultural practices, including the restricted use of agrochemicals. Floriculture green label programs are a way for consumers to know that the ecological criteria has been met before the product ever makes it either to a retail florist or to a grocery store in the form of a flower bouquet. A few examples of green ecolabels used in floriculture include: ISO 14001, Ethical Trading Initiative, EKO, Flower Label Program, Fair Flowers Fair Plants, Veriflora Certified,  Bloomcheck, Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, FlorVerde, FlorEcuador, EHPEA, Organic Bouquet, and KFC Code of Conduct.

Floriculture and Eco Flowers

With the continued growth of offshore flower production , the floriculture industry has grown susceptible to criticism about working conditions and environmental impact. The use and regulation of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, water use, and labor, have all come into scrutiny and the need for third party certification and verification gave birth to eco flowers. As a response to the emergence of a large number of social and environmental international standards, flower growers have begun to adopt best practices in sustainable floriculture.

Green Labels and Organic Certification

Green Labels - Organic Certification

Green Label certified does not mean it’s also certified organic by default. Many Green Label certified flowers are organic. Some are certified, others are not, and others are not organic at all. Organic certification is expensive, and some flower farmers choose to grow crops using organic agriculture, but choose Green Label certification over organic certification – and some choose both. One of the criteria is that flower farmers must commit to sustainable agriculture, and for many farmers, this means utilizing organic agricultural methods. Grassroots environmental organizations invest in technological progress, more efficient infrastructures, and defend precious resources.
